Safety Evaluation Report Summary: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission released its final Safety Evaluation Report on the proposed Private Fuel Storage facility on September 29, 2000. Updated supplements to the report, covering aircraft and cruise missile crashes and seismic issues, were released in November and December 2001. The report finds that the facility and the casks that would store the spent fuel would be safe and meet regulatory requirements. Background: The Safety Evaluation Report, produced by the staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is the NRC's independent review and analysis of all safety related aspects of the proposed storage facility, including: casks proposed for use at the facility, geographical characteristics of the site, proposed facility operations, radiation protection features, decommissioning plans, safety and accident analyses, emergency planning, financial qualifications of PFS to operate the facility according to federal regulations, and other safety related features of the facility. Included in the report is an analysis of various hazards during normal, unusual, and accident conditions. For example, it considers earthquakes, a dropped cask, flood, fire, lightning, tornadoes, and aircraft crashes. To obtain a copy of
