Why Utah?

You may wonder why Private Fuel Storage selected the Skull Valley Goshute reservation in Tooele County, Utah as the site for a safe, clean, temporary storage facility for spent nuclear fuel rods.

Very simply, a suitable site for a temporary storage facility must

  • Have a willing host
  • Meet the requirements of federal regulations to ensure safety for the public and the environment.

The Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians is a willing host.

  • The Tribe had studied spent fuel storage for about six years before they began negotiating to lease a portion of their land to PFS. (To find out more about the Tribe's investigations, visit the Skull Valley Goshutes Project History section of their Web site.)
  • Tribal executives traveled to many parts of the U.S. and four foreign countries to study nuclear power plants, reprocessing and storage facilities.
  • The Tribe also spoke to residents who lived near these facilities, as well as to environmental organizations before deciding to be a host community.
  • By signing resolutions, two thirds of the voting members of the Tribe authorized Tribal executives to sign a lease with PFS and begin the project.
  • The Skull Valley Band will receive significant economic benefits from the project.

We have met the requirements of federal regulations.

In our application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, we showed that the Skull Valley site will meet or exceed the federal requirements for safety and security. But you don't have to take our word for it; as part of the licensing process, we are providing additional scientific data and expert testimony to support our application. The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will decide if we have met the regulations.
