"I've watched the industry grow and expand, and I think it still holds the potential and promise that it did when I first went into the field. It offers much not only for the people of Utah, but the world and United States in particular. It's a major source for power, it provides over 20% of our electrical energy today, and it's also used in research and in many ways. "The reaction that goes on in a nuclear power plant is a nuclear reaction. It does not require oxygen. It doesn't produce any gases. All the material is self-contained. And as a result, there are no greenhouse gases released from a nuclear power plant. "The significance of this is very important to recognize. The bulk of the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that we produce in this country result from fossil fuel plants which produce our electrical power. Now, many in the industry and many scientists recognize that. But since electrical power is so important to us the question is, how can we maintain the standard of living that we enjoy in this country and still use electrical power as we need to? "Well, nuclear is one of the very important options that allow us to do that. There are others that have been suggested - wind power and solar. But in truth, nuclear is the one that's much better developed. It's already providing 20%; wind and solar provide probably less than a tenth of a percent to the electrical power in this country. "Now some countries, such as France, derive 75% of their electrical energy from nuclear. Their greenhouse gases are way down; they are minor compared to the United States and others. And they just don't understand why the United States has its head in the sand. "We don't like waste of any kind, but in truth, the waste from a nuclear plant is very small in volume compared to that of fossil fuel plants. And when you look at it on a technical basis and you consider it from a rational, unemotional position, most scientists, the National Academy of Sciences among them, realize that nuclear energy is a very important option for us to use to produce electrical power. It has so many advantages. "Admittedly, all energy sources have problems. They all pollute, they all have difficulties, but nuclear probably has the least risks and can be handled the most safely. The American Medical Association has reviewed the use of nuclear power in the country and its total consequences, and they find the health effects deriving from nuclear are probably the smallest of all of the methods, including, hydro, coal, natural gas, solar, and wind."
